Lowering sodium consumption

Excessive consumption of sodium is a persistent health problem, causing increased rates of high blood pressure and related illnesses such as cardiovascular diseases. The Institute of Medicine recommends that adults consume no more than 2,300 milligrams of sodium each day, with lower amounts recommended for older adults, black patients and those with high blood pressure - groups that are at higher risk.

"Our results are driven by the fact that nearly 30 percent of the nation's population has hypertension," Palar said. "One of the reasons that hypertension is so pervasive is that sodium consumption is so high."

Health communications ...

Twitter, the increasingly popular social networking tool that was at first merely a convenient way to stay in touch with friends and family, is emerging as a potentially valuable means of real-time, on-the-go communication of healthcare information and medical alerts, as described in a feature article in the Medical Connectivity section of the latest issue of Telemedicine and e-Health, a peer-reviewed journal published by Mary Ann Liebert, Inc., and the official journal of the American Telemedicine Association.

Physician groups, hospitals, and healthcare organizations are discovering a range of beneficial applications for using Twitter to communicate timely information both within the medical community and to patients and the public. Short messages, or "tweets," delivered through Twitter go out from a sender to a group of recipients simultaneously, providing a fast and easy way to reach a lot of people in a short time. This has obvious advantages for sharing time-critical information such as disaster alerts and drug safety warnings, tracking disease outbreaks, or disseminating healthcare information. 08 09

'The American College of Physicians Evidenced-Based Guide to Complementary & Alternative Medicine' provides evidence of CAM effectiveness and safety for different medical conditions. More than one-third of Americans use complementary or alternative medicine (CAM). The vast majority of patients use CAM in addition to, rather than instead of, a conventional medical regimen.

"A practical, well researched summary that will help integrate unconventional healing approaches into the mainstream healthcare system." - Mehmet Oz, MD, Vice Chair and Professor of Surgery, NY Presbyterian Hospital, Columbia University

Alternative and complementary medicine should have role in new era of health care reform

CAM encourages a holistic view of health, and new government policies should reflect that view with a shift in both CAM and conventional health research budgets "away from the longstanding emphasis on single intervention therapeutics and toward multifactorial integrative and whole-systems approaches," writes Daniel Redwood, D.C., Associate Professor at Cleveland Chiropractic College. 2009, Volume 15 Number 1, The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine

Effects of healing touch therapy

Healing Touch is a series of techniques that balance energy for wholeness within a person's body, mind and soul. It is an energy therapy that can be used in conjunction with other traditional medical treatments.

"By restoring balance within the energy system, you create an optimal environment for healing," Judy Bowers says. "This is complementary medicine, not alternative medicine, so it can be easily incorporated in a medical model."
