Harley Street ... in the news ...

Warner Leisure Hotels, the luxury hotel group, is sponsoring its second major television drama series with 'Harley Street', ITV's new multi-million pound six-part production.

Harley Street is a modern medical drama set in one of the most famous streets in the world. Starring Paul Nicholls (EastEnders) and Suranne Jones (Coronation Street), Harley Street is made by Carnival Film and Television, producers of the successful Hotel Babylon

The new Harley Street series focuses on a private medical practice, run by three leading GP's, Martha Elliot (Suranne Jones), Robert Fielding (Paul Nicholls) and cosmetic surgeon and GP Ekkow Obiang (Shaun Parkes). The drama follows the complex personal relationships of the doctors who are continually forced to make life and death decisions while trying to find a balance between their work and home life.

Did you catch the following Harley Street episode:

"Tensions are running high as the bid for Dr Cost's business intensifies. Ekkow worries when a patient wants surgery in order to compete with her teenage daughter."  Nice quote from the episode: "Surgery is not a substitute for a good diet and exercise."

Next Exisode ...

Robert helps a Premiership footballer who is in bad form. Martha helps a mother come to terms with her child's medical condition. An old friend of Ekkow attends the clinic for help. Add twists and turns and a bit of laughter ("is the best medicine"), and you've another entertaining episode of Harley Street.

Next Episode ...

Ekkow does a brain scan on a young husband, Robert sees two elderly sisters, and Annie's personal trainer turns out to be not as fit as he makes out. Ekkow also faces a jet-set lifestyle decision. Another interesting episode.

Next Episode ...

Martha and Robert face one of their most challenging cases to date - where life and death really does lie in their hands. Ekkow helps a patient come to terms with her facial injury.

Next Episode ...

A blast from the past could have very serious repercussions for Martha. Ekkow solves a patient's unusual problem without lifting a finger. Robert and Quinn get all worked up over a patient. On a personal level, has Robert left it too late?

Health Content in Popular Television

Innovative Survey Conducted with Grey's Anatomy Television Show

The Kaiser Family Foundation sponsored the briefing, "Hollywood & Health: Health Content in Popular Television." An innovative experiment with Grey's Anatomy, one of television's most watched shows, to measure the reach and effectiveness of an embedded health message in a specific episode of the show from the last television season and a survey examining the prevalence and quality of health content in popular, scripted prime-time television.

Popular primetime television's primary purpose is to entertain the audience, but it also has the ability to convey messages about serious issues. Some key questions examined at the briefing: How much health content is there in primetime television? What is the depth of the health content on television? Does the public retain the messages they see on television shows? Do they take any action after absorbing these messages? Are show writers and researchers careful to be accurate about the health messages delivered on their shows?
